Our mission is to continuously improve — not only our beloved long hot water bottle, but the way our world revolves and evolves. Issues of sustainability and ethics are close to our hearts here at YuYu. This is why we do our best at burdening our natural environment as little as possible, while bringing the necessary warmth and comfort to the people that need it.
We try to choose a more sustainable option with everything we do, from our product sourcing to our packaging, shipping and warehousing. The world is not perfect and nor are we, but we strive towards the ideal and that makes our journey worthwhile. Down below you can find some of the ways we support our goals of ethical responsibility.
Many of the hot water bottles available in the market are made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a synthetic plastic polymer most often (roughly half of all PVC) used for pipes for municipal and industrial purposes. Exposure to PVC includes exposure to phthalates and chlorine, which may have harmful effects on health, especially when exposed to heat.
We do not want people to be holding any such thing so close to their skin. Therefore, we source our hot water bottle’s natural and biodegradable rubber from the finest rubber trees in Sri Lanka through a method called tapping. In this method, an incision is made into the bark, allowing the fluid to be collected into a vessel attached to the rubber tree. The liquid is a sticky, milky sap called latex, and after several processes it is moulded into a long bottle.
Aiming towards using less plastic, by using biodegradable bags for our deliveries, we hope to be 80% free of plastic by 2021.
We create jobs in rural areas of Sri Lanka. Enabling communities work close to their homes so that they can be with their families.
The YuYu Bottle helps to reduce energy consumption that would otherwise be spent on other heating sources.
We distribute unsold and unused bottles to London’s homeless and are currently working on plans for a hot water filling station in the city.
